‘Iran Opposed to Nukes as Forbidden by Islam’

TEHRAN (Dispatches) – Iran is diametrically opposed to nuclear arms as their development, acquisition, stockpiling and use are prohibited under Islamic law, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says.
"Iran's Leader has long made it abundantly clear that nuclear weapons are immoral & contravene Islamic principles. Their development, acquisition, stockpiling & use is thus forbidden,” Zarif said in a tweet on Saturday.
He stressed that development, acquisition, stockpiling and using nuclear weapons is forbidden in Iran, saying, "We're categorically opposed to nuclear arms as a religious/moral duty and strategic imperative."
On April 17, 2010, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei issued a fatwa declaring that the production, stockpiling, and use of nuclear weapons are all haram (religiously banned).
"Iran is not after a nuclear bomb. Why would Iran want a nuclear bomb? Moreover, when an atomic bomb is detonated, it does not just kill enemies. Rather, it kills innocent people as well, and this goes against Islamic beliefs and the principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran. An atomic bomb does not discriminate between good and bad people, and it is not something that the Islamic Republic would use. The Islamic Republic is relying on something that is not affected by bombs, foreign invasions and other such things. Such things only strengthen what the Islamic republic is relying on. The Islamic republic is relying on the people," a part of the fatwa said.
Zarif also incorporated part of a recent speech by Ayatollah Khamenei on nuclear arms in his tweet and added, "We're categorically opposed to nuclear arms as a religious/moral duty & strategic imperative”.
Recently, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said Iran will never spend its resources on developing nuclear weapons, the proliferation, stockpiling and using of which are forbidden by the religion of Islam.
In a meeting with top Iranian students and young prodigies on Wednesday, the Leader said that science unlocks the true benefits of knowledge only when it is paired with the right understanding of humanitarianism.
"In the case of the key and very beneficial nuclear science...  when it was paired with a thirst for more power, it resulted in the creation of the nuclear weapon and turned into a major threat to the world and humanity,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.
