Egyptian Court Sentences 6 to Death Over Terror Charges

CAIRO (Dispatches) – An Egyptian court has sentenced on Saturday six defendants to death and eight others to life in prison over terror charges.
The Giza Criminal Court referred the papers of the defendants to the country's Grand Mufti, the highest religious official, whose non-binding opinion is required by Egyptian law, Egypt's official news agency MENA reported.
In the case publicly known as "the attack on the Three Pyramids Hotel" in greater Cairo, another 12 juveniles to 10 years in prison.
The prosecution accused the 26 defendants of leading an unlawful group, aiding it with weapons and funds and attacking the hotel in 2016.
They were also charged with gun possession, using force against police and vandalism.
In January 2016, a group of gunmen gathered in front of the Three Pyramids Hotel, which housed Arab-Israeli tourists.
Terrorism prevailed in Egypt since the military ousted former President Mohamed Morsi in early July 2013 in response to mass protests against his 12-month rule.
Terror attacks killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers in restive North Sinai province northeastern Cairo before they gradually extended to other provinces, where dozens of civilians, mainly Christians were killed.
Most of the attacks were claimed by Sinai State group, which is based in Egypt's North Sinai province.
