BARCELONA (Dispatches) – Barcelona have made a nightmare start to the defense of their La Liga title by losing Luis Suarez to injury and then losing 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao, after a sensational late volley from substitute Aritz Aduriz.
The Catalan giants came close to scoring the 1st goal of the new season after 30 minutes of play on Friday, as an awful back pass by Unai Lopez fell straight to Luis Suarez, who smashed the ball into the post.
Griezmann, Barcelona's biggest offseason signing, was held scoreless in his competitive debut after joining from rival Atlético Madrid for 120 million euros ($133 million). It was a lackluster performance for the France forward whose only significant scoring chance came with a header in the final minutes.
Barca had their next serious chance in the 70th minute, but Ivan Rakitic fired a powerful effort over the crossbar.
Athletic Bilbao, who enjoyed the support of the home crowd, did not back down against the defending champions and finally made the breakthrough with a minute on the clock when substitute Aritz Aduriz unleashed a sensational bicycle kick past Marc ter Stegen to seal the win for the hosts.
