Russia Upset USA 3-1 at VNL, Clinch Gold Medal


CHICAGO (Dispatches) - Russia have retained their title at the Volleyball Nations League after defeating team USA 3 sets to 1 in Chicago.
It was a close contest and the hosts, who had crushed the Russians in straight sets in pool A on Saturday, were motivated to beat them again. But, the defending champions, Russia overpowered the hosts and won the opener 25-23.
The Americans stormed back and won the 2nd set 25-20. Russia, however, seized control of the match in the next two sets and grabbed them 25-21 and 25-20 respectively, to win the title for the second time.
Poland have claimed the bronze medal of the 2019 Volleyball Nations League, after defeating Brazil in straight sets. The poles dominated the match in the opener and outscored Brazil 25-17.
The 2016 Olympic champions, Brazil regrouped in the next set, but that was not enough and Poland grabbed the 2nd set 25-23. The back-to-back world Champions, Poland did not allow Brazil’s resilience to scratch their dominance and won the third 25-21.
Iran and France finished in fifth and sixth place respectively.
