Iran Crush Russia 3-0 to Top Table at VNL

TEHRAN (Dispatches) - Iran’s national volleyball team has ruthlessly put Russia to the sword to tighten their grip at the top of the standings of the 2019 FIVB Nations League.
The Russians went into the match hoping to establish the longest winning run in the VNL of eight successive wins. But right from the get-go that challenge seemed a tall order as the Iranians swept to a 25-20 win in the opener.
If the first set was a cruise, the second was a much tighter affair befitting of a clash between the 2 leading teams in the standings.
Accordingly, table toppers Iran won it 26-24 after overturning a six-point deficit. The Asian titans, who had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against reigning world champions Poland a day earlier, were simply in no mood to show mercy.
They scored a 25-23 win in the third set to put the Russians out of their misery. Amir Ghafour led the scoring with 17 points for Iran while Victor Poletaev had the most for Russia with 16.
