Persepolis, Esteghlal Win, Fail to Qualify for Round 16 in AFC Champions League

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian football clubs Persepolis and Esteghlal team have defeated their rivals but failed to qualify for the Round of 16.
Persepolis football team of Iran defeated Al Sadd of Qatar 2-0 on Matchday Six of the 2019 AFC Champions League Group D on Monday.
In Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, Mehdi Torabi opened the scoring with a thunderous drive into the top corner of Saad Al Sheeb’s net to put the host in front in the 16th minute.
Ali Alipour made it 2-0 in the 67th minute after receiving a pass from Torabi.
Torabi was named the Man of the Match at the end of the encounter.
Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia defeated Uzbekistan’s Pakhtakor 2-1 in the same group.
Persepolis finished in fourth place in the group with seven points.
Al Sadd stayed top of the group with 10 points, followed by Al Ahli (nine points) and Pakhtakor (eight points).
And also Esteghlal, claimed a 2-1 victory over the UAE’s Al Ain at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in Group C on Monday.
Swedish international striker Marcus Berg gave Al Ain the lead in the 13th minute but Mohammad Daneshgar equalized the match in the 21st minute.
Morteza Tabrizi scored the winning goal just before the half time.
The result means Al Ain went an entire AFC Champions League campaign without a single win for the first time in its history as it finished bottom of the group with two points.
Esteghlal, meanwhile, climbed up to eight points but stayed third, one point behind Al Duhail.
Al Hilal had already qualified for the Round of 16 with 13 points.
