DAMASCUS (Dispatches) – A total of 70 civilians were killed and wounded Tuesday by a U.S.-led airstrike in eastern Syria, state TV reported.
The airstrikes targeted a camp for displaced people in the eastern countryside of Dayr al-Zawr.
The airstrikes have intensified recently on Daesh-held areas in the eastern Euphrates river region.
On Saturday, the U.S.-backed so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) started on the final stage of attacks against the Daesh in the eastern Euphrates river region in eastern Syria.
Following the evacuation of over 20,000 civilians from the town of Baghouz in the eastern countryside of Dayr al-Zawr, the SDF started on Saturday night the operation against the remaining Daesh-held pocket in the eastern Euphrates region, according to Mustafa Balli, the head of the SDF media office.
Balli said that the battle aims to eliminate the last Daesh terrorists in the town of Baghouz.
Meanwhile, an explosion hit the Syrian side of the Bab al-Salameh crossing on the Syrian-Turkish border on Tuesday, Turkish broadcaster NTV said.
The explosion at the border crossing, located between the Syrian town of Azaz and the Turkish town of Kilis, left an unspecified number of people wounded, NTV said.
According to the CNN Turk TV channel, a car rigged with explosives blew-up near a checkpoint in Syria. The border crossing is located in the Turkish province of Kilis, in the republic's south.
Killis Province Governor Recep Soyturk said that "the attack is not directed against Turkey. It is addressed to the Free Syrian Army".
On Friday, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar reiterated that the country was preparing for this military operation, claiming that it would be launched "at the right time."
In early December, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkey was ready to launch a military operation against Kurdish militants on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River as well as in Syria's Manbij, located near the Turkish border if the United States did not remove the militants from there.
