Iran Needs to Develop Grassroots Football: Ex-Coach

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Ex-Iran national football team coach Heshmat Mohajerani says that the country needs to develop the grassroots football.
Mohajerani is known as the most successful Iranian coach, who won AFC Asian Cup in 1976 and led the team to the quarter-finals of 1976 Summer Olympics and also qualification to the 1978 FIFA World Cup.
Now, the 80-year-old coach says the Iranian football officials must take the grassroots football into consideration.
"I think the officials of football federation should not rush to choose new coach for Team Melli. They need time to select the best option,” Mohajerani said.
"The next coach must develop our grassroots football as Qatar has done in the previous years. They won the 2019 AFC Asian Cup and will earn more in the upcoming years,” he added.
"We have to invest in young players because they can help our football in the future,” he concluded.
