All Eyes on Iraq for Formation of Broad-Based Unity Government

By: Kayhan Int’l Staff Writer

With the elections over and the results announced, the hung parliament of Iraq, where there is no clear-cut majority for any group to form a government and select a prime minister on its own, should now start inter-party talks to give shape to the new administration.
As per the constitution, the prime minister who wields executive power should be from the Shi’a majority of Iraq. The three leading parties who have managed to poll the most number of seats are Shi’a Muslims.
According to results, the "as-Sairoon” led by the Seyyed Moqtada Sadr, who himself was not a candidate for the parliament and hence cannot be prime minister, have won 54 of the 329 parliamentary seats – a far cry from absolute majority.
Second on the list with 47 seats is "al-Fath” of Hadi al-Ameri, a prominent leader of the Hashd as-Sha’bi or Popular Liberation Units that weeded out the US and Saudi supported Takfiri terrorists from Iraq, and whose own force the famous Badr Brigade had played a pivotal role in the long struggle of the Iraqi people against Saddam of the repressive Ba’th minority regime.
Incumbent Premier, Haidar al-Ebadi’s party "an-Nasr” has come third with 42 seats, followed by "al-Hekma” of Seyyed Ammar al-Hakim (formerly head of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution of Iraq), and former prime minister, Nouri Maleki’s "Dowlat al-Qanouni” (State of the Law).
In accordance with constitutional laws "as-Sairoon” which polled the most number of seats, have to prove to the parliament whether, with the help of other parties, whether it can form a coalition of at least half the parliamentary seats, that is, 165.
If "as-Sairoon” is unable to work out a coalition, then "al-Fath” will be given the chance to convince other parties to join it in the form a coalition government, and if it fails in its bid, "an-Nasr” of Haidar will be asked to show its strength by merging like-minded parties.
It is hoped the horse-trading will be successfully over by the end of the blessed fasting month of Ramadhan, and a powerful unity government representing the various political, religious and ethnic groups of the country will emerge in order to make Iraq a strong and truly independent state.
Iraqi politicians are mature enough to form a strong coalition, and hopefully they will knit together to safeguard the peace, stability and prosperity of the Land of the Two Rivers, which their common enemies, the Americans and the Saudis, had almost succeeded in destabilizing and destroying through the despicable Takfiri terrorists, if not for the fatwa of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani of the Najaf seminary for mass mobilization, coupled with timely help from the fraternal Islamic Republic of Iran.
Iraqis realize the gravity of the US crimes which had resulted in the death of over 1.2 million Iraqis during the occupation that followed the downfall of Saddam who with the active backing of Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states had unleashed bouts of genocide against the country’s Shi’a Arab majority and the ethnic Kurds, while involving Iraq in a disastrous 8-year war against Islamic Iran.
Iran, as a fraternal neighbour which has steadfastly stood beside the brotherly people of Iraq ever since the triumph of the Islamic Revolution and throughout the reign of terror of the Ba’thists, followed by the bloody American occupation and the Takfiri bid to take over the country, supports the will of the Iraqi people, and will continue to cooperate with them.
The guidelines for good government have already been set by Grand Ayatollah Sistani, and the new administration, on the basis of the dynamic rules of Islam, as were practically demonstrated over a millennium and three centuries ago on the soil of Iraq by the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali ibn Abi Taleb (AS), the Frist Infallible Heir of Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), is expected to be a solid part of the Resistance Front against the stratagems of Global Arrogance and the illegal Zionist entity.
