New Cold War Washington’s Doing

By: Kayhan Int’l Staff Writer

The United States and its European allies have imposed sanctions on Russia for its alleged interference in Ukraine, which has got nothing whatever to do with Washington or anyone else.

However, President Barack Obama has pushed Ukraine to the brink of political, economic and social collapse, and he still wants to blame Russia for the damage he has done! This is while Moscow is in no way responsible for Ukraine’s descent into anarchy. That’s all Washington’s doing, just as Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and now Syria were Washington’s doing.

Ukraine’s troubles began when the U.S. State Department and the CIA toppled the elected president in February and replaced him with a compliant pro-Western who agreed to follow Washington’s directives. The new "junta” government quickly launched a full-blown war against Russian-speaking Ukrainians in the east, which split the civilian population and drove the country to ruin. The plan to "pacify” the East was concocted in Washington, not Kiev and certainly not Moscow.

Moscow has repeatedly called for an end to the violence and a resumption of negotiations, but the West, leading to another round of hostilities, has rebuffed each request.

Nevertheless, Western experts are of the opinion that Washington’s inconsiderate rhetoric over Moscow’s alleged military action in Ukraine has jeopardized Washington’s strategic objective of exerting pressure on Iran over its nuclear power program.

Remarkably, simple-minded Western experts also argue that this has come at a very opportune time for Iran, claiming that any new split between Washington, Europe and Moscow will be welcome by Tehran – "anything that gives Iran more time.”

Quite the opposite, Ukraine is not far from Iran’s borders and Tehran is not happy to see Russian or Ukrainian people get killed over territorial disputes or Western meddling so that it could subtly benefit from it in the nuclear dispute with the West.

In fact, Tehran is against aggression of any sort and will do all it can to ensure stability and peace in Eastern Europe, particularly in the Caucasus. Tehran firmly believes that it is totally un-Islamic, cruel and unacceptable to wish destruction and ruin for others.

More significantly, conflicts as such could only escalate to something that may cause more regional instability and bloodshed, which Tehran does not want under any circumstances - even if it is under national/international sanctions and/or unjustified diplomatic pressures and military threats.

All these realities remain as true as they ever were for the Islamic Republic of Iran. Regrettably, given the nature of the American regime and Western sanctions/pressures, there is little prospect now of avoiding a drawn out confrontation with Russia.

The United States and the European Union only have themselves to blame for the extant crisis in Ukraine. They were the ones that offered military training and political support that emboldened the opposition to stage a coup, and they are the ones that should accept responsibility for whatever came afterwards.

The harsh reality, though, is that official Washington has once again alienated a sincere post-Communist Russia instead of trying to integrate it into the Western hemisphere, inadvertently adding the new chapter of Second Cold War to the Obama regime’s book of historic blunders. What a waste!
