KERMAN (IRNA) – Representative and judges of the World Craft Council are in Sirjan, Kerman Province, to review a decision to name the city as the global city of kilims.
Director General of Kerman’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization Mahmoud Vafayee said on Friday that during their two-day stay in Sirjan, judges and representatives from the World Craft Council will examine issues like training, production and trading of the flat tapestry-woven carpets or kilims made in Sirjan.

After their evaluation, the judges will attend a press conference to announce the results, Vafayee said.

14,000 kilim weavers live in Sirjan that produce one of the most famous kilims in the world.

Kilim weaving is a part of women’s daily duties in the Afshar tribe and it is also their main source of income.

The World Crafts Council is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that was founded in 1964 to promote fellowship, foster economic development through income generating craft related activities, organize exchange programs, workshops, conferences, seminars, and exhibitions - and in general, to offer encouragement, help, and advice to the craftsperson of the world.
