Peace Conference in France: Come Again?

By: Kayhan Int’l Staff Writer

It’s wishful thinking on the part of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to have  welcomed the closing statement of a Middle East peace conference held in France, "which stressed the need to end the Israeli occupation.”
PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat is also wasting his time to call on France "to immediately recognize the State of Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.” It won’t happen.
No conference in the world, including the Paris conference, has what it takes to create a momentum” to reject the "Israeli occupation and its settlement enterprise” in action. In words, of course, they all issue beautiful words and statements. The Paris conference was not an exception. But in action, it’s totally a different matter.
The thing is the usurper regime will never abide by international law to end its military occupation of Palestine. It did level the besieged city of Gaza and killed thousands of innocent civilians in broad daylight and the world did nothing  about it. It sees no reason to abide by a silly conference that by the way doesn’t happen to represent the Palestinian resistance front Hamas.
How is it possible for the PLO to rally the world behind it for unity of resolve when it it unable to get Hamas, the most effective force against Israel, on board in this difficult time? The PLO cannot hold the Israeli regime accountable for its systematic violations of international law and the rights of the Palestinian people when it’s unable to get the resistance front on board.
This includes the so-called peace talks between Israel and Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority. Neither Israeli nor Palestinian representatives were in attendance in the futile gathering. As expected, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) also rejected earlier a draft resolution demanding the recognition of an independent Palestinian state.
This is not surprising. Since 1948, the Palestinians have been fighting for an independent state in the midst of the irrational backing of the United States and European allies to Israel. It is true that the international community has once again toyed with the Palestinians and their legitimate cause; but it is also true that from now on they will be more than ever determined to continue to stand their ground.
The Palestinians have realized that Israel and its Western friends will stop at nothing to expand territories and they have nothing to lose if they resist. By saying no to the doomed bill, the UNSC likewise made it clear this is now the only option left for the Palestinians, if they are to have an independent state.
What became so evident from the last Israeli war on Gaza and the ongoing protests is the official confirmation of Israel’s failure in achieving its evil objectives and the confirmation of the disgraced decline in its deterrence capability.
The Palestinians have learned that armed resistance and not silly talks is the way forward. They have learned that the so-called "invincible army” of Israel can be defeated. With the lessons learned, the Palestinians have realized that resistance is far more effective than dialogue with Israel or attending a peace conference for peace in Paris that refuses to live up to its name.
