A Shameful Chapter in Human History

By: Kayhan Int’l Staff Writer Gaza continues to be the only besieged city in the world whose people are collectively being punished for supporting an elected government. Amid a shaky and bogus ceasefire, the callous Zionist regime is still wreaking havoc in and around the besieged enclave – under the pretext of destroying Hamas-built tunnels.
The Zionist regime’s armed forces pounded the defenseless city for over three weeks, during which at least 10,000 people were killed and wounded, mainly women and children.
Similarly, Zionist settlers and the police killed and injured Palestinian protesters in the West Bank and other occupied territories, while rampaging through Palestinian fields and neighborhoods, setting olive trees on fire and trashing houses.
The project of ethnic cleansing is indeed well underway in occupied Palestine, backed by a ruthless entity that plans to build thousands of illegal units on occupied lands at any cost.
Just as importantly, the international community is hearing less about the disaster in the Gaza Strip. That silence is intentional: The criminal regime of Israel has barred Western journalists from entering the occupied territory simply because this is a U.S.-created and U.S.-supported disaster.
Unlike the West Bank, although Gaza has been beleaguered, no Zionist troop has ever dared enter the city – despite the unbearable destruction, hunger, poverty and power outage.
The criminal regime might have had the capacities and the means to pound the Strip, but it will never be able to defeat Hamas or even stop rocket fire. This is because all Gazans are Hamas members now.
At any rate, it is the responsibility of all people in the world to insist on the inviolability and universality of human rights. As such, and compelled by the UN Charter, the international community must call for an immediate change in the UN/Western policy regarding Palestine.
While proclaiming that all peoples in the region have a right to security, successive U.S./European governments have openly condoned the usurper regime’s systematic violation of the Palestinian population’s basic human rights to live free of military coercion and violence.
The international community must assume its responsibilities regarding the Zionist carnage in Gaza, particularly its collective punishment, brutality, land expropriation, home demolitions and daily humiliation of an entire population.
Amid the ongoing ceasefire, the UN, likewise, must publicly and unequivocally demand the immediate and unilateral withdrawal of all Zionist military forces from the Gaza Strip. But even if that happens, thanks to the failure of the world body in fulfilling its responsibilities regarding the Palestinian people, the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza will remain as a shameful chapter in human history for generations to come.
