Chess Legend Karpov Arrives in Rasht

RASHT (IRNA) -- Russian chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov arrived in Rasht to attend the inaugural ceremony of the 14th International Khazar Cup Competitions.
Upon his arrival in the northern Iranian city, he was welcomed by the officials of Gilan province’s Sports and Youth Department.
Karpov expressed pleasure over his trip to the city again, saying that fortunately, Khazar Cup Chess Competitions attended by well-known chess players are held at a high level each year.
Russian chess players were of course interested to take part in the event but due to simultaneous holding of international Chess Contest in Russia, they could not attend the competition in Rasht.
The 14th International Khazar Cup Competitions attended by 450 distinguished local and foreign chess players from Armenia, Azerbaijan Republic, Greece, Iraq, the Netherland, Poland, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine, the US and Georgia will open on Thursday and will continue for eight days.
Karpov is a Russian chess grandmaster and former World Champion. He was the official world champion from 1975 to 1985 when he was defeated by Garry Kasparov. He played three matches against Kasparov for the title from 1986 to 1990, before becoming FIDE World Champion once again after Kasparov broke away from FIDE (World Chess Federation) in 1993.
