Iraqi Forces Repels Attacks by ISIL Terrorists

BAGHDAD (Dispatches) – Iraqi armed forces have repelled an attack by Takfiri terrorists on the central city of Baquba while the terrorists seize parts of Kirkuk.

Iraqi security forces say they repelled two separate assaults by Takfiri militants.
According to Iraqi military sources, terrorists from the terrorist group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), tried to attack and take control of Baquba in Diyala Province overnight, but were pushed back.
At least 44 people, mostly senior ISIL members, died when the group failed in its attempt to release them from a prison, west of Baquba. At least 9 other terrorists were killed in separate clashes with Iraqi police in the same city.
Similarly, the ISIL terrorists were beaten back from the village of Basheer in the south of Kirkuk.
Iraqi officials also say the terrorists are in control of some parts of the strategic town of Tal Afar in Nineveh Province.
Iraqi lawmakers say 1200 additional troops have been deployed to Tal Afar to fight the terrorists there.
They say dozens of people have been killed in the latest round of fighting there.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin says the UN Security Council (UNSC) unanimously supports the Iraqi government’s fight against terrorism.
Churkin, who holds the rotating presidency of the UNSC for the month of June, said the terrorism issue is serious in Iraq and requires a united response from the international community.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has also strongly condemned the acts carried out by the terrorists, calling on the international community to support the Iraqi government’s fight against Takfiris.

US Deploys 300 Troops

The United States has deployed nearly 300 American forces in and around Iraq to help secure US assets, as al-Qaida-linked terrorists from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) capture key northern cities.
President Barack Obama notified Congress that up to 275 troops would be sent to Iraq to provide support and security for US personnel and the American Embassy in Baghdad.
"This force is deploying for the purpose of protecting US citizens and property, if necessary, and is equipped for combat," Obama said in a letter to US legislators. "This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed."
About 170 US service members who have already arrived in Iraq are armed for combat while nearly 100 additional forces used for security and logistics support are being put on standby, most likely in Kuwait.
Obama has asked his national security team to prepare a range of options that could help support Iraqi security forces. However, he promised last week that US forces won’t be engaged in direct fighting inside the Middle Eastern country.
US officials say the White House is also considering sending about 100 Special Forces soldiers to Iraq to focus on training and advising Iraqi troops.
Chairman of the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, Michael McCaul (R-Texas), warned Sunday that ISIL terrorists pose the greatest threat to the US since the September 11, 2001 attacks.
A US intelligence analyst told Press TV on Saturday that the "constant failure of American foreign policy” in the Middle East has fueled the rise of Takfiri terrorists in Iraq and Syria.
