Shahid Mahdavi Enters Southern Hemisphere

Milestone

TEHRAN -- An Iranian warship has begun a mission in oceanic waters as naval forces are expanding their presence in the international waters and high seas.
The aircraft carrier Shahid Mahdavi operated by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has reached waters in the southern hemisphere.
The 240-meter-long vessel is on a milestone mission, marking the first venture of an Iranian frigate below the equator.
The IRGC earlier this year fired long-range ballistic missiles from the carrier during a naval drill. The ship is outfitted with advanced radar and air defense systems.
The Shahid Mahdavi is also capable of carrying various types of attack helicopters, combat drones as well as fast attack craft.
Iranian military experts and engineers have in recent years made remarkable breakthroughs in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient.
Officials say the Islamic Republic will not hesitate to strengthen its military capabilities, including its missile power, which are entirely meant for defense.
Iran has made it clear that its defense capabilities are not subject to negotiation. Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayat ollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has repeatedly called for efforts to maintain and boost Iran’s defense capabilities.
